Maria Checchia, B.A.
Masters-Level Intern
Hi! I’m Maria, and I’m a Master’s Level Intern at Lilac Therapy Center, LLC. I am a dedicated and compassionate graduate student in the Masters of Social Work program at West Chester University. I am driven by a deep commitment to empowering children, teens, and families through trauma-informed care, behavioral interventions, and compassionate support. I enjoy connecting with clients while creating a grounding space for them to learn and grow safely while managing struggles related to anxiety, depression, and trauma.
My passion for the field is grounded in both lived experience and formal training. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Health with a minor in Psychology from Alvernia University, where I first developed a strong foundation in mental health and child welfare. I have completed undergraduate internships at Caron Treatment Centers and the Children’s Home of Reading, where I observed and provided various therapeutic practices, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
I also completed a graduate-level internship at the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CCTC), working in a school-based setting within the Philadelphia School District. This role has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with students while applying therapeutic interventions and community-based resources to support their emotional and behavioral needs. Professionally, I have worked as a Behavioral Health Technician at CCTC since 2021, supporting elementary school students through behavior modification, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed emotional support. I have also served as an Assistant Day Shift Coordinator and School Liaison at MCC Warwick House, where I supported youth in residential care and led teams to maintain safe and supportive environments.
Through my internship experience at Lilac Therapy Center, I am looking forward to continuing to learn and grow as a clinician, while forming deep and supportive relationships with children and families in our care. My future goals include working towards becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and continuing to work with children and teens.
