“Parenting through tough times isn’t about knowing all the answers—
it’s about being present through the unknowns.”
-Laura Markham

SPACE Treatment
for Childhood Anxiety
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
If your child struggles with anxiety, you may feel like your entire family is organizing around it—avoiding certain situations, adjusting routines, or stepping in to prevent distress before it starts.
These responses often come from a natural instinct to protect your child. However, over time, some accommodations can unintentionally reinforce anxiety and make it harder for children to build confidence in their ability to cope.
SPACE is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment that helps reduce childhood anxiety by working directly with parents—without requiring the child to attend sessions.
-
Developed by Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE focuses on changing how adults respond to a child's anxiety by:
• Reducing accommodations that maintain anxiety
• Increasing supportive, confident responses
• Communicating belief in a child's ability to copeResearch has shown that SPACE can be as effective as individual therapy for children experiencing anxiety.
-
Parents meet regularly with a trained therapist to learn and practice specific strategies. Together, we will:
• Identify how anxiety is showing up in your child's life
• Understand the accommodations currently in place
• Create a plan to gradually reduce those accommodations
• Learn supportive language that validates your child while maintaining healthy boundaries
• Build confidence in responding to anxiety in a calm, consistent wayThis structured, goal-oriented approach is always delivered with warmth, flexibility, and respect for your family's unique needs.
-
SPACE may be a good fit if:
• Your child struggles with anxiety, OCD, social anxiety, separation anxiety, phobias, or related concerns
• Your child is resistant to therapy or unwilling to participate
• You frequently adjust routines or step in to prevent your child's distress
• You feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to helpBecause SPACE works directly with parents, it can be especially beneficial when traditional therapy hasn't been successful—or isn't feasible right now.
-
We bring both clinical expertise and real-life understanding to this work.
With advanced training in SPACE and extensive experience supporting children, families, and caregivers, we guide parents through this process with clarity, compassion, and practical support. We recognize that making changes—especially when your child is distressed—isn't easy.
You will be supported every step of the way.
